This year several countries changed their Daylight Savings Time settings...Russia along with other countries have cancelled them all together. The big IT companies have followed suit and pushed out "Patches" Me being the inquisitive person that I am wondered 1) how many folks are actually ready for this...2) will it really matter... I mean everyone and their mother screamed about the whole Y2K thing and for months we prepared and patched and in the end I think it was all a big scam... in any case... here are some links regarding this new "crisis" in case you want to make sure your calendars and clocks work after this weekend.

Every summer there is some sort of maintenance work done on the city's centralized heating/hot water system (the pipes I guess) and they cut the hot water off regions at a time. It's not the worst thing in the world and some spoiled folks like me have hot water heaters in their bathrooms just for that occasion... I haven't blogged in a while so my apologies if you watch this space. I have been using Twitter quite a bit so if you want to know what I'm up to you can look me up here at my twitter page.

Oct 10th is now a important day to our family with the birth of the latest addition to it Janina. Baby, Mom and Dad are happy at home with the assistance of new grandma. (going to have to bring her to Russia when its our turn)

A few weeks ago we took a chance and went on a lazy vacation in Egypt where we sat and played and did nothing touristy except look at the pretty fishes. Here are some pictures. I must say we had an amazing time and will deffinitely do the lazy vacation thing again!!!

And last but not least(because I've left out many many things in between) Yesterday I played on a full sized soccer pitch for the very first time ever with the Russia Today team and must say it was pretty cool.

So the other night we came home and parked the car in front of the pharmacy. We came to the car the next day, or better said to where we thought the car would be(green spot in the pic below) and were extremely confused as we found that the truck we parked behind was now in the spot where we left the car but our car was neither in front or behind the truck...

I pushed on the alarm buttons and the car unlocked and locked... So that made me feel a bit better since it meant that the car had not been towed. A few long seconds later I found the car about 60 meters away (30 Feet or so) from where we had parked it. (Red spot on the picture above)

The question now is how the hell did the car move??? There were no signs or special warnings nothing!!! I think they used one of the evil evacuators to move the car.

Here's the proof in pictures. I took some phone cam shots of the pad marks on the rims and tires of our car. (you can see the pads/clamps used in the video above)

New office space

One of the things I've been doing every year since moving here has been new construction projects. Every year so far we've expanded the office and this time the IT boys get their own space, including a new server room. I still haven't figured out the more exciting part but I think I'm going to go with having my own office. There was so much going on at the time of construction and planning that now that things have settled down I've yet to completely move. In either case here's a picture of my desk and a new Ikea coffee table I bought for my new space.

Keep an eye on your bank account... I just found out that for any transaction whether bank/debit/purchase/Pin Citibank is charging me a 2% fee. So lets say you go out on a friday night and spend 100 dollars on dinner and drinks and put it on your card... they take 2 dollars. Now consider there are 52 or so fridays in a year... and think about how many other times you use your bank card...and you might be able to understand how utterly unacceptable I think this is and how foolish its made me feel that its taken me a whole year to say hey what are those foreign fees on my statement about... grrrr.... hate being a grown up at times...

I know its been a while since I write... so here I am... its been a long time so I wont bother with catch up stuff... except to say... last month I completed my first full year!!! It's been a hell of a learning/growing/loving experience. Ok that said. After much research and debate and convincing (convincing myself to buy something useful and not just vain) I have decided 1) to buy a car 2) that I will buy a Chevrolet Lacetti...(sorry guys its not sold in the US) but here's a pic and a review (the english on this page is a little rough but the pics are correct and the review is about right...). I blame it all on my brother... he bought a Toyota Matrix not to long ago and loves it... I tried to look for one here...but they're not "sold" here officially so maintenance and fixes and warranties are hard to come by...

I'm having a real awkward moment right now... late last night...early this morning I found out that one of my uncles passed away... that's him on the left (my dad is in the middle Titi Carmendelia is on the right)...he's one of dad's older brothers and we were with him just last year... we knew he was a little sick but didn't know it was terminal... Last week... I got that call... dad called saying he had terminal cancer... last night dad asked my brother to ask me to call him... and sadly I knew what the news would be. So in his memory I blog how awkward I well how sad it is to be me right now. We weren't too close but it really does feel like I was just at his house. They've always been so good to me. I can remember when I was younger my aunt was a nurse, I had hurt my head playing and twice a week we would go to their house and she'd tend to my wound. My uncle would sit on his rocker watching TV after spending the day on somewhere out on his farms... I remember drinking goats milk (probably for the first time) from one of his goats, I remember spending hours running around his house chasing the roosters and lizards... In his Memory... I remember...

So its been a while probably way to long... so my apologies... In the last few weeks Tanya was here (pictures soon) and it was awesome spending time with her and seeing her again, Winky is now an Expat. (for those of you that don't know Winky is my cat... check the previous post)... I had my phone and wallet relocated...(and that's all I have to say about that) I twisted my ankle the first day we played soccer outdoors...but I scored the first goal... I've been to Kostrama (300 Km's north from Moscow) and seen the Volga river (one of the largest rivers in Russia). I know have a Motorola L7 which is pretty kewl.. and I'm still kicking ass at work... Next on the schedule is to get one of those man-purse not one I carry or a fanny pack things... (dont want to have my wallet relocated again...) My newest addiction is watching Adult Swim in Russian... If you don't know what Adult Swim is go to www.cartoonnetwork.com and find out. There is a new channel in Moscow an its called 2X2 and they play Adult Swim on it... sometimes in English most times in Russian... It's great Robot Chicken RULES!!!!

Thursday afternoon Tanya landed for NY at Sheremetevo2 International Airport here in Moscow and along with here came Mr. Winky (Mr. only because he'll be six years old this september now making him a fill grown adult cat) That said Winky behaved really well on the flight over in his new fancy Sherpa (officially certified flight/pet carrier) bag. Here's a few pictures of him getting to meet Rory for the first time...

Camping, Kayaking, Drinking

The May day holidays are huge in Russia and so we too advantage of the time off and went camping/kayaking. In short we drove 100km away from Moscow, then loaded our gear into a hired bus (there were 7 of us in all), then the bus drove another 80 km or so to the river (the town of Islaimovo, Smolensk area) There we put the boats together (check the pictures) loaded our gear into three boats and rowed off. The weather was cool but clear for day one and two and on those two days we covered about 60km in the water. Stopping at lunch time to eat and at night to camp (tents, fire, cooking over the fire and all) and of course drinking all along the way. The third day we woke up to a blizzard. The snow fell and fell and fell from who know when until about 3pm. Luckily the guys were able to talk the bus guy to drive to the forest were our camp was at (there was a dirt road that they were somehow able to direct him to) and we did not do any rowing on day three. Click here for all the pictures. I really must say that it was amazing to get out of Moscow for a while and see lots of greenery.

a little catch up work...

It's been three months... it took about one and a half for the box this tag was on to get to my new apartment... but I think all things said and done I've acquired new routines and have sort of settled in. I think Rory has also grown quite accustomed to her new surroundings... she meets me at the door everyday and every morning she's at my bedroom door when I wake up. I've lost some weight and my hair has gotten much longer (at first I was afraid to go somewhere and get it cut...now I don't want to cut it). Everything is going very well at work. I was able to take part in something really great when we offered a helping hand to some corporate friends in their time of need. (temporary housing due to a fire in their building) That felt really nice and I was very proud that we were 1) able to help people in need... 2) able to pull off a small miracle or two and get it all done in about 9 hrs.

I was blocking a sideline kick and blocked the ball with my right eye.... talk about giving it your all... the lights went out or really bright for a few seconds and I had to sit down... If you're really a Yankee fan a slew of things apply to you.. here's my short list 1) I've had beers before each of the games I've gone to at Stan's 2) I've had soo much "fun" at a game that I forgot to take the car out of the parking deck after the game...(the decks close 1hr after the game) 3) I've been kicked out of a game (see video here) and have walked down a few sections then walked back in. 4) I remember drinking in the Bleacher seats!!! 5) I've attended a Playoff game (the last one of the 1999 World Series!!!) 6) I have an assortment of Yankee baseball caps, shirts, and of course a jacket. 7) I believe the Red Sox's Suck!!! Ok that said It will sure be weird not to be able to watch the games... but I will do my best to keep up via the web .

So I don't know what happened... but a few days ago my Internet Explorer decided it would choose which language to display webpages in for me... Luckily I only have two languages installed currently... unfortunately I'm not quite fluent in Russian yet so I can't always understand the pages... this is what my blog profile looks like....

I just did and I am proud to say that I fill up a whole page of responses and (at least on the first page) they are all actually me! The blog page is towards the bottom of the list though... I wonder how I change that.

The last few days have been beautiful with temperatures ranging between 12 and 16 degrees Celsius. Which is unseasonably warm...but you wont hear anyone complain. The picture above is of the Moscow River... I live 2 minutes from it on the other side of these blocks.

The delivery company was here early and out the door by 11:05am. I'm unpacking and so excited and relieved... it's strange how your physical belonging can bring such a sense of comfort... :)
